In 1999 on a whim Joan purchased acrylic paints, brushes, and canvases and embarked on her career as an artist. She became a member of the Oak Bay Community Artists Society and subsequently participated in the twice-yearly Open Studio Tours in Oak Bay, and the Bowker Creek Brush-Up. Joan has also participated in the Victoria Arts Council Look Show and the SPAC Spring show.
Her main focus in her acrylic paintings is flowers but she has branched out to include animals and scenery. Her greatest encouragement comes from people telling her that the vibrant colours in her paintings make them feel happy. She donates cards made from her paintings to Our Place, Jeneece Place, and Extreme Activities for Kids.
